FGFS PORTLAND – DAY 3

Can it be Summer again already. We’re barely even into winter and I’m already missing the warm weather in Portland. It was so nice while it lasted. Ramon Antonio invited a bunch of the homies from California to come ride with us up here. This is day 3 of their trip. By this point I had shifted my focus from photo to shooting video and capturing long lens second angles. That being said, I did shoot a bunch of stills of everyone jumping this parking lot bank.

I’m not sure what Miguel Zendejas is eating for breakfast, but it’s working. He has tailwhips unlike anybody else in fixed gear right now. Must have signed his name in blood on some ancient scroll to achieve such talent and skill on two wheels. Johnathan Ball is another one of those dudes who always surprises you with how deep is bag of tricks can be. He’s like felix the cat the way he pulls things out of thin air. I’ll shut up now, photos > words.

FGFS PORTLAND – DO YOU THINK YOU’RE BETTER OFF ALONE?

Do you think you’re better off alone? If so, come ‘talk to me’. Alice Deejay’s hit single Better Off Alone was the anthem to our weekend. But isn’t it always. Riding is always better with a squad. I guess it’s the strength in numbers mentality that comes along with it. On Saturday we gathered together some of the best FGFS riders the West Coast has to offer, and met up to ride around our new found home in Portland.

We packed our bags, loaded bikes into the Re-Rack Van and headed to University of Portland to kick start our day. After dodging campus security for a few hours, we got what we needed, pushed our luck a little too far, and decided to head downtown for a change of scenery. Jimmy Watcha sealed the deal, and drove the final nail into the coffin with one of the heaviest lines I’ve ever seen. The sun was setting and the day was pretty much over after that. Always finish on a strong note

FGFS PORTLAND – FRIDAY THE 13TH

Friday the 13th may be a day of superstition for some, but to us it’s something to look forward to. Whether it’s cheap tattoos of black cats, or in our case afternoon sessions spent dodging rain drops and wishing for breaks in the rain. Either way it always feels like a good day to roll the dice and take some chances.

This weekend was a special occasion. The homies Andy Sparks, Gus Molina, and Jimmy Watcha drove up from the Bay Area to ride for the week. Friday was the first chance we had where the rain wasn’t completely shutting down the day. Jimmy caught some big airs on the River City Cycles banks while it was coming down. I’m surprised he never slipped out because of how wet it was. Gus Molina summoned some spirits underground as we attempted to seek shelter and ride uninterrupted. When the day was up, we all cracked cans by the river and looked forward to what tomorrow would bring.

FGFS PORTLAND – DAY 2

Blow the whistle. After taking a short mid-day break, we loaded up the van and headed back to down town to see what else we could stack before the sun set.

I didn’t shoot as many photos as the day before but was able to get a handful of shots of Miguel Zendejas’ neon yellow Master Bike Co Prototype. I’m not sure when these frames will be available to the public, but I’ve heard whispers of them rolling out sometime in the few couple months. What I can tell you is that these frames are incredibly compact, have steep head tube angles and offer up one of the most progressive geometries FGFS has ever seen.

If you’ve ever ridden with us, than I’m sure you already know, but I’m always the idiot running around trying to round up the crew for a family photo. It’s become somewhat of a tradition at this point, and is always worth the effort. This one in particular was potentially the most challenging one we’ve taken yet. We used the typical 10 second timer, but added in a 2 second exposure as a curve ball. Shout out to these dudes for remaining completely still during that time and to anyone else who has ever put up with my consistent craziness. One day I’ll publish a book of all these group shot. You’ll see.

That just about covers it. Again, keep em peeled for photos from Day 3 of our time together in Portland. Click “MORE” to check out other photos from day 2. (more…)

FGFS PORTLAND – 35MM

Life is better with grain. Film photos always have such stronger feels and carry such a greater reward for capturing the moment with a single click. It’s been minute since the homies from down south were in town. Still having a hard time calling Portland a city. Feels more like a suburb with a skyline. More trees than buildings over 2 stories tall.

I tried shooting an old roll of color Kodachrome while they were here. Lets just say it didn’t work out as planned. Haha. It basically came out as a bunch of gray images. That roll aside, here are some photos that did turn out. Until next time my dudes. (Riders: Miguel Zendejas, Johnathan Ball, Josh Silva, Ramon Antonio III, Sam Allgood)

PINK TACO – DAY SESSION 2015

A couple weeks ago we all met up in SF and drove down a dirt road to this DIY skate spot we’ve been wanting to ride. We set up camp, hydrated, ate pizza, and shredded until the sun started to set and the fog rolled in. The mix of quikrete and graffiti made the ditch as slick as ice and took some getting used to, but after about an hour or so everybody figured out the footwork and was back in action. This definitely wasn’t the easiest spot to ride, but that’s what made it rad. We all had a killer time and are already figuring out the next trip outside The City.

TURF – DRAGON PARK 2015

A couple weeks ago Mike Schmitt, Ramon Antonio, Andy Sparks, Ian Walker and I met up in Oakland for a chill session at Dragon Park. We kicked it there for most of the day riding bikes & catching sunburns before venturing off into other parts of the neighborhood. Head over to the TURF Website for more.

The other day we all met up after work to kick it and get in a quick session before the sun went down in the city. I brought my camera along with me and caught a couple flicks of Ramon Antoino III clicking an XUP off this pizza ledge. He took a pretty heavy slam before taking his jacket off, circling around and nailing it for the clip. Lucas Bockelmann was there to capture it all and was the main reason why we decided to meet up in the first place. Check out another photo of the slam below and keep your eyes peeled for the clips in the next video Ratpack has cooking up.
